After yesterday’s uncharacteristically warm day in the Spa paddock, Friday has seen a return to a more normal situation for the Belgian race weekend, as intermittent light rain ensured that the first free practice session saw all the cars start on either Pirelli’s extreme rain tyres or, and this included the two Toro Rosso cars, Intermediates.
For a brief while the clouds parted just enough for Daniel and Jean-Eric to go out on the Hard slicks, as they headed for ninth and thirteenth respectively on the FP1 timesheet, come the end of the 90 minute session. The Aussie did 14 laps and the Frenchman completed 17.
Hard to draw any conclusions relating to the performance level of the STR8 but track time is always useful, whatever the conditions. Quickest this morning was Fernando Alonso for Ferrari, followed by the Force India duo of Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil. Fourth was Sergio Perez for McLaren, with Nico Rosberg fifth in the Mercedes, ahead of reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull.
