SPA FRANCORCHAMPS

Event Info

The Spa Francorchamps circuit features one of the most scenic settings of the entire season. At around seven kilometres, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is the longest on the calendar. Set in the Ardennes, Spa features a mixture of straights, high-speed and slow corners and a slippery surface that all adds up to it being known as the “F1 University.”

Features of the Spa Circuit

The nicest part of the track? Well, many reckon it’s the bit from Eau Rouge to Blanchimont, with its famous switchback “S” curve that generates an impressive level of compression as well as high lateral g forces, where even the slightest error is punished.

A strong power unit is vital at the Spa Circuit, when you consider that there are two very long sections that are taken flat out: the first sees the driver use full throttle for 18 seconds and the second one for 22 seconds. The cars run with a medium level of downforce, striving to find the right compromise between top speed for the quick sections and good cornering performance.

Only the greatest champions have won at the difficult Spa-Francorchamps track: Michael Schumacher did it no fewer than six times, Ayrton Senna five, Jim Clark and Kimi Raikkonen 4. A new track record was established in 2018, set by Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes, with a lap in 1.46.286.
