This weekend just gone was a memorable one for Rome, as the city was the centre of attention on the world stage. On an international level, there was the canonisation of the Popes John XXIII and John Paul II and on the home front, 25th April was a holiday, while there was also a clash of the titans on the football field as Roma played Milan in Serie A. For AS Roma it was a big game, bringing their run of consecutive wins to nine.
But what has all this got to do with Scuderia Toro Rosso and Formula 1? Well, our very own Daniil Kvyat spent his birthday weekend in Rome, celebrating turning 20 by supporting his favourite football team, Roma! He was a guest of the team and thus witnessed a great match, won by the home squad, 2-nil, thanks to a masterful goal from Pjanic and another from Gervinho. For Daniil, the excitement continued after the final whistle, when he met the Roma players, including Captain, Francesco Totti. The number 10 was the leitmotif of their meeting as the footballer plays with the number ten on his shirt and Daniil finished tenth in the last race in China. What better then than to swap “team kit” with the Formula 1 driver being given a football shirt and the player getting a race suit from a rather special young fan.
“It was great game, very exciting and the atmosphere in this stadium with all the Roman fans is really unique,” said Daniil. “I am happy to have been invited and thank AS Roma. Getting to meet a champion like Francesco Totti is really special for any Roma fan or anyone who loves football. I hope I can meet him again and watch him in action in the World Cup in Brazil later this year.”
