Pierre Gasly has been knocking on the door of Formula 1 ever since winning the 2016 GP2 series in dramatic fashion, taking the title at the final round in Abu Dhabi. Actually, you could say he started knocking at the age of 2, when he first used to go to kart tracks to watch his elder brothers. The talented 21 year old has petrol in his veins, given that his grandfather used to kart and his father tried his hand at a variety of motor sport disciplines. The 21 year old Frenchman hails from the city of Rouen, famous for a race track that used to host the French Grand Prix a long time ago.

Like all his peers, Gasly’s racing began in karts, in which he competed from 2006 to 2010. Pierre’s first taste of single-seater racing came in the competitive French F4 Championship in 2011, when he finished third in the championship before moving up to the 2 litre Formula Renaults the following year. He came third that season before taking the title in 2013. By this time, his speed and determination had caught the eye of the Red Bull talent scouts and he joined the Junior Programme, moving up to the 3.5 Renault series in 2014. He was runner-up behind another well known Red Bull Junior, none other than Carlos Sainz. That year, he also got his first taste of GP2 before tackling the whole 2015 season in this Formula 1 feeder championship, with mixed results. However, last year, it all came good when he joined the Prema Power team, bringing home the Champion’s trophy at the end of a thrilling season.

Since 2015, Pierre Gasly has combined racing with being on duty as the reserve driver for Red Bull Racing. However, with no seats available in Formula 1 at the end of 2016, he was given the chance to broaden his experience, by racing in the very competitive Japanese Super Formula Championship. Before joining us for his F1 debut, in the 2017 Malaysian GP, Pierre had already impressed in Japan, taking two wins and three podiums in his maiden season in the land of the Rising Sun. Pierre missed the United States GP to contest the final round of the Super Formula season, as he was only 0.5 points behind the championship leader. Unfortunately for Pierre, Typhoon Lan’s presence around the Suzuka circuit meant that both races were cancelled, meaning he had to settle for runner-up in the championship to Hiroaki Ishiura.

Pierre returned to our Formula 1 team for the Mexican GP and raced in the following three races of 2017, before being announced as one of our 2018 drivers, partnering Brendon Hartley. Pierre already knew our team well enough as he tested for us at Barcelona in 2015 and 2016. In 2018, he raced behind the wheel of our STR13, scoring 29 points. At the end of the season Pierre moved to Red Bull Racing. In 2019, Pierre has been racing for our sister team until the summer break, then he came back to Scuderia Toro Rosso, teaming up with Daniil Kvyat from the 2019 Belgian Grand Prix onwards.
